Concept Art

Zayne music video -
Compare the concept art to the real thing:
  • Graphics are very similar to the concept art
  • Same retro colors
  • Lots of black and white
What is concept art and why is it important?
  • Concept art is so important as it gives a vision of what they want the video to look like.
  • Helps the artist to visualize
  • Helps the person that creates the concept art to develop their idea
Visualisation diagrams :
  • Shows different angles of the designs
  • Different colors of the designs
  • Any point the diagrams can be altered and changed if the designs are disliked. Always room for improvement and development.
Why is a visualization diagram useful?
  • They are in place to help with your initial idea
  • Sketches are then added to and new versions are made to create the final copy
  • Gradually over time, the design is completed as the final version.
  • For example, the original version of the visualization diagram was very different to the final original Buzz light year.
Flat plans -
  • A flat plan is a visual diagram of a plan for a magazine.
  • This is how they create their original ideas for every page of the magazine
  • They have to include adverts first and pictures
  • They include adverts first as it is how they pay for the magazine
Prototypes -
  • A physical mockup of a product that is usually the first edition.
  • There are lots of different versions
  • Aim is so you can physically see the product and is made out of different material
  • colors and designs are focused on
Mockups -
  • Model or a replica of different types of products that can be from the same company
  • Shows designs of the products
  • Where and how much space there is

Evaluation

-Project Manager would lead the evaluation of pre-preproduction documents.
-Evaluate in terms of effectiveness for the media products they helped plan.
  • Was the right person doing it?
  • Was the document appropriate? Would a better/different document do?
  • Changes/tweaks
Why evaluate pre-prod docs?

Evaluating the effectiveness of pre-prodction documentation is vital in ensuring that the final version that is sent to the production team is effective.

If documents aren't checked, they could be the case of a major planning problem, so it is important that the quality of the documents is evaluated.

How to evaluate?
The documents needs to be considered in relation to
  • Suitability of content for meeting brief and usefulness in aiding the production team in producing the product
  • Suitability of content for the target audience.
Should use:
  • Positive language - e.g "this could be improved by..."
  •  Consideration for the original designer/creator
  • Specific feedback on any suggested improvement - justifying why it would make the document more effective.
EVALUATING A PRE PRODUCITION DOCUMENT
 =  SET DIAGRAM/FLOOR PLAN
  • Suitable as it shows all of the set - has a clear layout
  • Easy to tell the genre of the show - studio based e.g. news, sport talks, talk show.
  • Not a very clear of what every thing is in on the page
  • No positioning of cameras on the sketch
  • Includes people and lighting
  • Not clear what the sketch is - a set sketch? just a design? (has no colour). floor plan? etc.
  • No measurements - no one knows how big the space is going to be
  • What are the people wearing? Cant tell genre
  • No colours - means the genre is unknown.
EVLUATING A PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
  • Spelling mistakes *schedule
  • Colour co-coordination - each job/department has a different colour
  • Clearly a production schedule for an animated film - easy to tell because the biggest chunk on the TO DO list is Animating
  • Should belong to a production manager
  • Amount of weeks schedules are on the timetable
  • A lot going on in one week so dates and months should be written on the schedule
  • Not a particularly accurate schedule

Logistics

Logistics definition: The way a task must be thought  about and practical problems solved to make it work.

  • Filming
  • On location
  • Waterfall
  • Tourist trap
  • Scotland
Logistics:
  • Travel arrangements for cast, crew and extras - taxis
  • Control of extras (untrained actors) - Trailers/marquees/greenrooms where people can wait and be held.
  • Health and safety - High VIZ jackets, crowd control
  • Making areas safe
  • Power = batteries? generator?
  • Security
  • Accommodation
  • Catering - Think about allergies/religious diet duties.
  • Transporting equipment
  • Toilets / disabled access, gender accessable toilets, toilet portals if no other toilets available.
  • Press and paparazzi control
  • Vehicles on set e.g. buggies
  • Distributions of scripts (sending scripts out early so people can read lines)
  • Riders - A list of stuff that a celebrity won't go anywhere without

Sample exam paper

1. (a) Identify two costs that Ian needs to consider when developing the 247Me app and explain how these costs impact on the project.  (6 marks)
One cost that Ian will need to consider when developing the 247Me app is paying for the staffing that help create the app. There are so many different members of staff needed for a project such as making an app. Some examples of  the staff that have to paid are graphic designers, artists, editors, etc. Another cost of developing this app would be paying for advertisment for this app. Without adveritsing and marketing this app, not many people would purchase it as it would be unpopular because know one would no about it.

(b) Identify one type of project management tool that Ian could use to keep track of the project tasks and explain why it is suitable for this task. (3 marks)
One type of project management tool that Ian would use is too create a To-Do-List. This specific type of project management is suitable for this task because they are an organised list that includes the exact tasks that need to be carried out and they can be personalised to the indvidual, meaning that the time and date can be included and specific deadlines of certain tasks.

2. Ella is a Graphic Designer. Discuss how her training and skills could be used by ProgressMediaUK when developing the 247Me app. (9 marks)
Being a graphic designer is an extremely important job role when developing an app. The role of a graphic designer is too meet specific briefs and develop them by designing and creating new ideas. A graphic designer often has to sketch they're ideas out first before putting them into place on the computer for the app. Ella's training and skills will have a very big impact on developing the 247me app because she will help to design the layout and style of the app, where everything is placed and what the app is going to look like. A key skill in being a graphic designer is having to meet target briefs and there deadlines which means Ella will have to have very good time management. This is so that projects are completed sucessfully and on  time.

3. Identify one act of legislation that is applicable to the 247Me app
The Data Protection Act 1998

4. A mock-up design of the 247Me app login screen has been created. Ian has given this to the marketing research company that ProgressMediaUK use.

(a)
(i) Identify one method of primary research that could be carried out using the mocked up design and explain why it is suitable. (3 marks)
One method of primary research that could be carried out using the mocked up design would be a focus group. A focus group would be suitable because it would be a group of individuals sitting in a room with the design infront of them. This gives individuals an oppourtunity to give their opinion on the design and explain why they may like or dislike it. It is also an easy type of research to set up and individuals are usaully more often when taking part in face-to-face research rather than participating online.

(ii) Explain one reason why open-ended questions would be a suitable research tool for the 247ME app development (3 marks)
An open-ended question would be suitable for the 247ME app because it gives people a chance to give a detailed and truthful answer. An open-ended question usually requires a longer and more full response, which again gives individuals the chance to say what they may like or dislike about the project, or what they think should change etc.

(iii) Explain one issue that could be caused for ProgressMediaUK by analysing the data collected using open-ended question (3 marks)
Alot of the responses of an open-ended question may be irrelevant and often are time waisting. An open-ended question tends to take alot longer to carry out alot more effort is put in place when often is not needed. Close-ended questions is a much faster process and usually gets straight to the point.

(b) Explain one way the outcome of the market research could affect the development of the 247Me app (3 marks)
The outcome of the market research could affect the development of the app because it is a quick and cheap process which will speed parts of the development up. This type of research also tends to help with figuring out what the gap in the market is and how our product (app) may fit into this gap creating a good target audience.

(c) Explain one reason why it is important to sample all genders in the 247Me app research.
 (3 marks)
It is important to sample all genders in the app so that no one will feel discriminated against and the app will not get mixed up with legal issues. If the app didnt sample all genders, an individual may feel the need to sue the company for being discriminitive towards certains genders.

5. Ella and Josh have identified a number of tasks that would need to be carried out during the development of the 247Me app. Use the tasks listed at the top of the table to create a basic project plan showing the work flow that would need to be completed.  The first one has been done for you.

6. When ProgressMediaUK offered you the apprenticeship, you were required to sign a form giving the intellectual property rights of any work you produce to ProgressMediaUK. Explain why you were required to sign this form. (3 marks)
I had to sign this form because any work that i create under the name of ProgressMediaUK legally i do not have the rights to own. Even though the piece of work is mine and i created it, the legal rights of the piece of work goes to ProgressMediaUk as the work was made within their company. I was required to sign this form to protect the companys rights against any work that is created and too ensure that no work is stolen and money is lost.

7. Using the product brief provided by Mikael to ProgressMediaUK:

(a) Identify one explicit requirement (1 mark)

(b) Identify one requirement that is open to interpretation. (1 mark)

(c) Identify one constraint on the project. (1 mark)

8.  As one of your first tasks in your apprenticeship Ella has asked you to create a visualisation diagram for the home screen of the 247Me app. In the space provided, create the first draft of the visualisation diagram for the home screen of the app. (6 marks)

Marks will be awarded for: 
  • content 
  • fitness for purpose 
  • use of annotations to justify your decisions.

9. Ian and Josh have asked you to tell them how you think the 247Me app can be designed and what pages could be included. Create a site structure diagram for the 247Me App showing the pages that could be included and show how they link together.  (6 marks)

Marks will be awarded for:

  • content 
  • fitness for purpose 
  • use of annotations to justify your decisions.

10* When Mikael first met with ProgressMediaUK to discuss the 247Me app, a SWOT analysis was carried out. Evaluate the potential effectiveness of a SWOT analysis as a development tool for the 247Me App. (20 marks)
A swot analysis is a simple and easy way to analyse the strengths and weaknesses, oppurtunities and threats that the product can be faced with. A swot analyse helps to identify the issues that may affect the 247me app. A SWOT analysis have many advantages such as it being so quick and easy to take out. It is an effective analysis that the majority of people understand. It is also a good development tool as it will give the producers of the app an insight as too what they did well when creating it and what they need to change or improve. This will make the app stronger and more popuar as a whole.

LO1 and LO2 test - reflect and perfect

 1. Explain the client requirements of this brief, outlining which are explicit, implicit and open to interpretation. (10)
The client brief has a specific deadline that has to be met for five weeks at a time. It is explicit that the video must include shots of the footwear range, name, logo, contact details, 4 clips minimum, and a range of different camera angles that are open to interpretation and so on.
The time of the video can be interpreted to anything between 20 and 40 seconds. The target audience of the video is between the ages 8 and 14 which is because the footwear is aimed at a younger audience. The requirement of this is open to interpretation. The video must meet this target audiences needs by adding relevant texts, fonts, colours and music. The video is also a promotional video which helps promote the product which is an implicit requirement.

2. What logistical issues can you foresee when creating this video? (4)
One logistical issue may be hiring actors and a crew. The productions cannot happen without the actors. Another issue would be having a location outside and the weather is bad. If this were the case, the whole day's schedule would be ruined and another day would have to be paid for, which leads to another issue of waisting too much money. Also having the location rented out for a long enough time could be an issue, as a range of shots are needed. The production is also on for a short amount of time. 5 weeks may not be long enough to film everything.

3. What potential legal issues will need to be addressed? Outline briefly the impact each one may have on the project and how they might be dealt with? (8)
One main issue would be gaining the legal rights to use the music that has been chosen. As you don't own the rights to the piece of music, it would be seen as copyright if you weren't given permission by the owner to use it. Another main legal issue would be making sure there are design rights on the products that have been made so that no one can steal your product. This is to ensure you don't loose legal ownership of the product and video. There also has to be location release forms in place. The impact of this is if the production is taking place in a public area then permission from the council and people around the set would have to of given permission, especially if it is private land. Also having children work on the production they have specific contracts that have to be signed otherwise they cannot work on set at all legally.
4. Produce a mind ma or mood board exploring how the age of the target audience will impact the design/content of the video (5)
5. Identify two costs associated with filming the advert for Zoo Shoes and explain how these costs impact on the project (4)
One main cost would be paying for all the staff working in production e.g. director, producer, make-up etc. (this is for expensive and can take a lot of money). If the staff of sent is well-known producers they are going to be a lot more expensive compared to producers that are not known. Another cost that is associated with filming is paying to rent/buy all of the equipment that is needed and to pay for the location that the advert is going to be filmed in.Both of these have an impact on the project because it is all crucial too have to make a successful production, however, it can be very expensive leaving us with a lower budget for everything else. Another cost that is crucial is paying for the rights of the music that is used. If this is not paid for the production could be sued and may have to pay a large sum of money. This is because the rights of the music is owned by someone else.

6. What market research could be done to learn more about Zoo shoes, and what is one outcome of this market research? (3)
A focus group market research could be taken it to find out more about Zoo shoes. An outcome of this market research is that it is quick and gains a lot of information from other people about the product. The market research will also help to see if there is a gap in the market and so whether or not the product Zoo shoes is a good fit for the gap.

7. Identify one type of project management tool that you could use to keep track of the project tasks and explain why it is suitable for this project. (3)
One project management tool would be a 'to-do-list'. These are helpful and suitable for projects like Zoo Shoes because it gives you can order to do things and is a clear and good way to be organized and get everything completed.

8. The film needs to be tested before it is sent to the client for approval. Outline what type of research this is and how you could go about completing this research. (3)
This type of research is market audience research. It would be tested by doing a market research to try and identify your target audience and their opinions and thoughts on the project that has been created. A market reseach could be done by a focus group, questionnaire or survey etc.
